Anna Katalkina

Anna Katalkina is a contemporary still life artist, influenced by the seventeenth century small Dutch paintings. She uses the indirect approach, which involves applying multiple translucent glazes of paint on top of underlayers in order to alter values and hues. The light travels through the glazes and reflects off the opaque layers below back to the eye of the viewer. This technique produces realistic and luminous paintings with a highly smooth surface. In the terms of the subject matter, Anna’s work expressly balances the traditional and the modern, the quirky, the playful, and draws from European travel, music, literature, and the performing arts. Anna's paintings are found in private collections in the U.S., France, and the U.K. She is based in Washington, D.C.
