Squeakie

Squeakie is a self-taught artist from the rural Lowcountry whose nostalgic paintings portray a simpler way of life in Coastal South Carolina. He draws his inspiration from memories of childhood where he often worked in tobacco and cotton fields. He talks about this time in his life as "the work was hard, but life was slower, more simple- not so many distractions and bills to pay." He went on to work in factories and grocery stores until he became a house painter for nearly 25 years. Like many self-taught artists, Squeakie did not start creatively painting until later in his life. He was encouraged to do so by his Uncle Henry "Squirrel" Stone, who was a folk artist himself. One of Squirrel's clients asked for a commissioned painting of a church. Squirrel passed this commission on to Squeakie. Since that first painting, Squeakie has a resolute sense of purpose in his work. In 2007 he became a full-time artist, and now his "naive, down-home pictures" have been bought by collectors across the United States, and abroad. He says he paints more now than when he painted houses as his paintings tend to get snapped up quickly.
