Shannon Wood is a local painter whose work is primarily inspired by local landscapes. She spoke with Charleston Scene this week about her focus and how she found her path as a full-time artist.
Q: What’s your signature style?
A: My signature style is an impressionistic view of the Lowcountry landscape. I mostly paint from memory. The skies are constantly changing here, which obviously affects the colors of the marsh and waterways.
I love texture, so sometimes, I will sew actual marsh reeds that I have found along the waters’ edge into the canvas, or glue pieces of handmade paper that have grasses embedded into them. I believe that by using actual materials from the landscape, it gives the piece a sense of realness. Another thing that I like to do to reinforce that sense of realness is to let the paint drip a little when I’m painting bodies of water. The horizon line is always a strong compositional element in my paintings.
